A Delicate Balance Required for NZ Cricket

New Zealand Cricket will have to play a balancing act when it comes to the calendar for Domestic Cricket if the Indian Premier League ends up being held later on this year. Ish Sodhi, a current International player, is the Rajasthan Royals’ Spin Bowling Consultant, and has commented on the possible clash.

Leg-Spinner Sodhi feels that if the IPL gets rescheduled to a possible window in October/November, our Cricket Board is going to run into some issues. The Twenty20 event will overlap with the first games of our Domestic season.

There are six Kiwi players set to play in the IPL. They are Jimmy Neesham, of the Kings XI Punjab, Lockie Ferguson, of the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Mumbai Indians’ Mitchell McClenaghan and Trent Boult, Kane Williamson, from the Sunrises Hyderabad, and the Chennai Super Kings’ Mitchell Santner.

Sodhi has commented that Cricket is usually a summer game in our country, starting off in October and coming to an end in April. He expressed concern that if the IPL does unfold in the possible October/November schedule, NZ Cricket will need to adjust their domestic calendar to take this into account.

When asked how he sees NZ Cricket doing it, Sodhi stated that in the past, they’ve always made sure a dedicated space is available for the IPL. He said that, if one wants the finest players in Domestic games but you don’t want them to miss out on huge sporting events like the IPL, then compromises are just a matter of fact.
