Tennis world No. 1 Novak Djokovic appears to be enjoying much more from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games than just the likelihood of a gold medal to look forward to after he beat his first-round opponent, world No. 140, Hugo Dellian of Bolivia, to the victory post on Saturday.
The Serbian, who for the longest time proved anything but popular among tennis fans and fellow sports people alike, is quickly emerging a right hit among his fellow athletes in the Olympic Village. In fact, ever since his arrival in Tokyo, Japan, there has hardly been a more popular personality to have graced Olympia than Djokovic.
Bolivian and first-round opponent Dellian perhaps proved the best case in point when after Saturday’s match he shared a warm embrace with his opponent before declaring that playing against the world No. 1 was an experience he wanted to remember for the rest of his life.

The world No. 1 has in the meantime said he’s using Tokyo 2020’s hotel accommodation facilities only to “sleep”, as he’s spending the rest of the time among his fellow athletes in order to enjoy as much of the Tokyo Olympic “energy” as possible. He’s reportedly also focusing a great deal on drawing strength from his own personal “feel-good” routines.
The Olympic Games is once again a welcome reminder of how prominent a sport tennis ranks within the global sporting context – and this year an even more welcome reminder as the sporting world as a whole continues to fight for survival.
