NZ Travel Restrictions’ Affect on Sport
The sports world in New Zealand is being hard hit by the travel restrictions that have been instituted to try to deal with the effects of the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak worldwide. The Warriors and Wellington Phoenix teams may soon be the only squads competing internationally for some time.
The National Rugby League decided on Sunday the 15th of March to keep going with the premier competition for the time being. The Warriors are already based on the Gold Coast, but SANZAAR has halted Super Rugby. The Wellington Phoenix may join the Warriors after Scott Morrison, the Prime Minister of Australia, announced travel restrictions similar to ours on Sunday afternoon.
Organisers decided to suspend Super Rugby competitions indefinitely after this weekend’s games because players are being required to go into self-isolation for 14 days as they return from matches overseas.

The Black Caps only got through one game of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy One Day International series before New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Adern announced our own travel restrictions and so cancelled the remaining two matches. The team made haste to get back home before the self-isolation process came into effect at midnight on the 15th.
Kiwi Olympic hopefuls are facing a nervous wait to see what they have to look forward to since the fate of the 2020 Tokyo Games remains undecided. Our Domestic Leagues are set to continue for now, though, albeit with restrictions on crowds being imposed and self-isolation periods for overseas players becoming mandatory.
