Capitals’ Devante Smith-Pelly On Potential White House Visit
The Capitals are just one win away from the Stanley Cup trophy, and while the team has said that they are not ready to think about celebrations, one player in particular has told reporters about what his thoughts are on a championship tradition.
Forward for the Capitals, Devante Smith-Pelly stated that he would most likely skip a visit to the White House if his team were tow in the Cup and a subsequent invitation to the United States capital.
Smith-Pelly went on to explain his reasoning, and much of it was aimed at current President Donald Trump, who Smith-Pelly has called racist and sexist. He continued by adding that many of the things Trump has said over the years is ‘pretty gross’ and that, while the subject hasn’t come up in the team, he has made up his own mind about going.

Smith-Pelly is one of two black players currently playing for the Capitals, and has reportedly been the target of racism during his time in the NHL, particularly over the last season. In one game that took place at United Center in Chicago, Blackhawk fans yelled “basketball” at Smith-Pelly while he was playing. They were banned from the Arena not long after.
Ted Leonsis, the owner of The Capitals, has never stated publicly that he is anti-Trump, but did previously host a fundraising dinner for Hillary Clinton leading up to the 2016 election. It’s yet to be seen whether this will play a factor in the White House tradition.
