Lions Investigating Racism Claims

The Golden Lions Rugby Union has recently announced that they are fully aware of an alleged account of racism that took place during a match between the under-21s of Roodepoort and The Wanderers.

Statements have been gathered from both clubs, as well as the referee for the match, and that a disciplinary hearing has since been organised, and that it will involve independent lawyers. Once the hearing has been completed, the Union will release an official statement regarding their ultimate findings.

A statement issued on social media by the Lions was as follows, “The GLRU condemns racism in all its forms and will not tolerate such behaviour.”

The racism was allegedly against black players of the Wanderers club, and they have stated that their black players were racially abused and assaulted by the opposing Roodepoort team. They also added that the referee did not make any attempts to correct what was happening or punish those that were involved, despite being informed about the racism that was allegedly taking place on the field. There has been no statement as of yet from the referee, and it is likely he will keep the matter private until the hearing has been concluded.

The attack, which started out verbal and then turned physical, is said to have taken place after the match was finished, and Roodepoort had won. This was then the Roodepoort players allegedly assaulted the black Wanderers players. Any conclusions on the matter will be released by the GLRU at a later date.
